The St. Augustine Light Station was the first established in Florida, and its original tower was the first one lighted in the state, on April 5, 1824.  The original lighthouse was built of coquina stone on the foundation of a Spanish watchtower, which itself had been rebuilt in 1737 on the ruins of possibly an older tower.  The first lighthouse survived until after the Civil War, when erosion became a serious threat.  In 1871, a new 167-foot tower was authorized six hundred yards southwest of the old tower on a site not as likely to be washed away.  The new lighthouse was completed and lighted on October 15, 1874, and in 1876, a new, two-story keeper’s dwelling was completed.  In August 1880, the old tower collapsed and its remains are under the waters of Salt Run, northeast of the present lighthouse.

The present lighthouse is a 165-foot brick tower equipped with a first-order Fresnel lens.  It consists of 370 hand–cut glass prisms arranged in a beehive shape towering twelve feet tall and six feet in diameter.  The lens still helps guide vessels with its fixed white beacon, visible up to 19 miles at sea.  The lighthouse tower has another current use—its distinctive black and white stripes spiraling up into the sky make an impressive landmark.  In 2002 the Coast Guard transferred the deed for the tower to the St Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, Inc.

The beautifully restored brick keeper’s residence houses an excellent museum that celebrates the history of the lighthouse and coastal Florida.  Attendees are encouraged to climb the 219 steps to the Lighthouse’s service gallery to get a gull’s eye view of the Atlantic and the old Spanish town of St. Augustine; view exhibits housed in four historic structures and the Maritime Education Center; view shipwreck artifacts being conserved in the lab, and take a walk on nature trails.
