FL LIGHTHOUSE PRESERVATION STATUTE SPEAKER

Florida's  Lighthouse Preservation Statute 380.285  requires the state to fund the study of the needs and preservation of the Florida’s historic lighthouses.  Robert F. Bendus, Director of the Division of Historical Resources and Florida's State Historic Preservation Officer will be speaking to the FLA Board Friday night and the general membership on Saturday. Learn what you can do to help get funding for preservation of Florida’s 30 historic Lighthouses!

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is the oldest structure in Palm Beach County, and when it was built in 1860 was the ONLY building within 100 miles in any direction. The Lighthouse was designed by Lt. George Gordon Meade in 1854 but due to various delays was not completed until 1860. Since the site for the Lighthouse was on a 48 foot natural parabolic dune Meade was able to save money and design a 108 foot tower that with a 1st order Fresnel lens could be seen for 23 miles. The Lighthouse has inner and outer brick walls; the outer wall is tapered but the inner wall is not, so the steps are the same size all the way to the top.  At the interior base of the lighthouse there are scuttles enabling one to see the dual wall construction.

In May 2008, Congress federally designated the lighthouse and surrounding 120 acres as the Jupiter Inlet lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA). In 2010 JILONA received ARRA funds for restoration projects that included painting the inside and outside of the Lighthouse, restoring the Keeper’s Workshop, reforesting the Lighthouse grounds, and construction of a new deck area.       Our event will begin with the board meeting at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Museum located at 500 Captain Armour’s Way, Jupiter Florida Map on Friday January 23, 2016 at 6:00pm.  Immediately following at 7:00pm will be a Social Hour under the Banyan tree at the base of the Lighthouse, hosted by the Loxahatchee River Historical Society.  A special treat will be a Night Climb of the Lighthouse.
