The present Pensacola Lighthouse is the second lighthouse to be built in Pensacola. The first was built in 1825 and was a 40 foot tower on a 40 foot buff, partially obscured by trees close to the tower and on Santa Rosa Island. The present tower was built in 1859, is 150 feet high setting on a 40 foot buff, making it 190 feet above sea level, giving it the highest focal plane in Florida. The Light is a first order Fresnel lens and can be seen for 27 miles.

Pensacola is known as the “City of Five Flags”, having flown at various times the flags of Spain, France, England, the Confederacy and finally the United States.  At the start of the Civil War the Lighthouse was controlled by the Confederacy whereas Fort Pickens, across the bay, was under Union control. The lens was removed from the lighthouse and most of the lighthouse supplies were used for the war effort. In November 1861 an artillery duel between the two forces damaged the tower. In 1863 the Confederate forces evacuated Pensacola and the Union forces moved in, using a fourth-order Fresnel lens to restore light to the tower, followed in 1869 with a new First-order Fresnel lens.

The lighthouse is located on the Pensacola Naval Air Station, home of the Blue Angles, and we will be having our meeting at the Chief’s Club, just a short distance from the lighthouse. Since this event is on the Naval Air Station EVERYONE MUST HAVE A PICTURE ID CARD and MUST SUBMIT THEIR DATE OF BIRTH.  Besides the lighthouse there are two other places of interest on the Station: Fort Barrancas  Fort Barrancas Map which is operated by the National Park Service, and the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Museum  Map both of which are in the same area as the lighthouse and our meeting place.

The event will begin with the Committee meetings on Friday 29 May 2015 at 5:00 PM at the Chief’s Club CPO Club Map, followed by the Board meeting at 6:00 PM. The Social will start at approx. 7:15 on the outdoor deck overlooking the Bay.  Saturday’s meeting will start at 9:00 AM at the same location.  A BBQ lunch from Sonny’s BBQ will be served about 12:00. After lunch we will go and climb the Lighthouse Pensacola Lighthouse Map.

Although we have not finalized our speakers, we are pleased to have Hal Pierce from the Alabama Lighthouse Association who will talk to us about plans for the Alabama Lighthouses.

The cost for this event will be $50 for members and $75 for non FLA members. This cost includes the Social, the Membership meeting, lunch, and admission to the Lighthouse. The non-member cost includes a 1 year membership in the Florida Lighthouse Association.
